Classical Guitar Procrastination – What Do You Do When You Don’t Want To Practice?

by Rob Reid on May 29, 2012

Hey Everyone,

I had a question friday night from Cameron through Facebook who asked what I do when I don’t feel like picking up the guitar – or more specifically, how I get myself to pick up the guitar when I don’t really feel like it :)

Often times it’s good just to let it go – sometimes if a rest is needed, but if you’ve been doing a bit more procrastination than usual and your trying to break the habit here’s a couple of tips.

I’m really interested to know what other people do to break the procrastination cycle! Let me know here or on FB at http://facebook.com/classicalguitartraining

I try to start with just a little practice or part that needs work and have some treats around to get more energy and feel good. I also try to feel energized, happy or just good before a practice session.

Great stuff – What treats do you prefer? I find a nice glass of Red Wine or a Single Malt works wonders! :) Only one or two though, then the playing goes wayyy down hill!

I like to have granola, nuts, and cookies, and tea. As long as it keeps you focused it’s alright.

I look and/or listen to better guitar players than me. I try to learn from their styles and technique. I also practice my sight reading. there is much more to clasical guitar playing than just playing the guitar.

I couldn’t agree more! I’ve also really been trying to get my sight-reading skills up to at least a “subpar” level ;)

I use the same technique you mentioned in the video, Rob; “I will just practice for five minutes.” Which has the same result for me as you mentioned. There has never been a five minute practice session. :-D
It helps that I don’t watch TV. Ever. Usually it is yard work to be done on a beautiful day that takes me away from my guitar. But sometimes I get the practice anyway in by taking the guitar outside on the deck so I am still outside enjoying good weather while still accomplishing my musical goals. Besides, the chipmunks enjoy a concert every now and then.
