Identifying Tension When Playing Classical Guitar – Video Practice Journal – April 25, 2012

by Rob Reid on April 25, 2012

I think I ended up doing this video on the 23rd but I always seem to get a little bit of a lag between the time that I make the video and the time I actually get around to adding it to this site :)

This video talks a lot about identifying tension when playing classical guitar. Now it’s probably not a new concept to you that we’re trying to get rid of as much tension as possible when we’re playing but one thing I’ve noticed over the years is that often I’m not actually aware of where the tension is in my body.

For instance in a complicated passage in the left hand I usually concentrate on making sure that my left arm/hand is relaxed etc… but I’ve noticed that many times the tension actually isn’t in my left hand and will crop up in other places!

Check out the video for a better idea of what I mean :)

Nice idea for your web page. I have a problem that may be addressed in your tension video, When I play the opening phrases of Leyenda, my right hand gets to bouncing, once I get to the fifth position with the octave high B, I am steady. I also have this problem on the Scherzino of the Tansman Cavatina, and the second movement of the Britten Nocturnal. We don’t even want to think about what happens when I try play my friend David Leisner’s Nel Mezzo. Got any tips how to control this?
